Solutions for condensation
Many people experience the severe problem of condensation which result in appearance of water and mould on walls and corners of rooms. If you live in old house the problem usually comes from the lack of layers in wall which are called - the vapor barriers. The architect could easily solve this problem by installing the needed layers and protecting the walls with special paints which will protect your house in future. However, this also could be the solution even in newer houses, because the depth of special layers of water barriers is about 1 cm and less, so it could happen that insulation has some damages or that it isn’t properly installed. Don’t be afraid to use one of the expensive types of insulation, because it will cut your fuel bills and surely pay off in long term.
The humidity of air is highest in rooms like kitchen and bathroom, so it’s good idea to keep windows open, to provide circulation of air and lower the humidity. There are also some electronic units (called dehumidifiers) which are used in kitchen and bathrooms that will help with this problem.
A good ventilation system is the best solution but also the most expensive one. I transfers the air whit much humidity and brings in new filtered air.
Some wall surfaces could be a problem, so make sure to check for cavities, even small ones, and ensure the proper maintenance. Use of special indoor and outdoor paints is also recommended. However you should keep an eye on the roof construction, and floors. Speaking of construction, double gazed windows will surely provide more protection then single glazed.
Solid floors are usually cold ones, because they have large thermal mass which means that it takes long time for them to warm up. Most architects would recommend a wood flooring or a floor heating solution.
There isn’t much philosophy when it comes to prevention of this problem. There are three steps to take to be condensation and mould-free. First - you have to reduce the moisture, second - raise the temperature of cold rooms, and finally - the circulation of air is needed - natural of installed. It is very important to find out to source of condensation, which isn’t always easy to figure out, and according to type of condensation to come up with permanent solution.
